Although this was in fact our 2nd day at Savour Kilkenny! As usual I am doing my blog posts back to front! 🙂
We spent 2 days this past weekend in Kilkenny – Friday and Saturday! Saturday was all about fun and food so I thought I’d share that experience first! We had travelled on Friday as both of us were guest speakers at the Savour Kilkenny Foodcamp – but more about that later.
So on Saturday morning…. in wind and rain we travelled over to Kilkenny and linked up with my brother and his family (who had travelled from Dublin) to wander and enjoy some food.
The set up this year was slightly different to last year’s event. The food demonstrations were being held at the Set Theatre whereas last year they had been on the Castle Parade with all the food producers there too. We arrived at about mid-day just in time for the most torrential downpour you could imagine! But we had come prepared – wellies, brollies, etc! The rain finally passed and the sunshine for the rest of the day was terrific!
We had 3 children (12, 9 and 8 ) with us…. all of whom I would classify as junior foodies! In between checking out the range of foods to taste, they tried to get a ‘flash mob’ going to Michael Jacksons thriller – but only their silly aunt joined in!
The 12 year old (boy) could not wait to try the kangaroo kebabs…. his verdict “kind of like duck, but sweeter and not as chewy”!
The girls however opted for a picnic sushi lunch which was deemed really nice.
After the picnic it was time for the girls to head to a Salt Dough Workshop at Rothe House. So while they were busy making all sorts for the next 2 hours…. the rest of us went off for lunch to Cafe Sol. Thank you to Mag at Goatsbridge Trout Farm for the wonderful recommendation!
Cafe Sol was busy…. absolutely no recession going on there! We had a wonderful lunch – each one of us enjoying what we had chosen. I opted for a Chilli Beef Wrap which was so tasty.
When we were all suitably stuffed it was time to head back to do some food shopping before picking the girls up.
The boy decided he had to try the Hot Chocolate that lots of people were wandering past with and looked so delicious.
He was very disappointed! Made with cocoa powder and water….. not impressed at all! Looked better than it tasted!
However, we did manage to stock up with Knockdrinna cheese – 3 or 4 types including their Snow Cheese! Lots of delicious Goatsbridge Trout and Onion Marmalade from Tastefully Yours, and the big hit of the day was the Ballyhoura Apple & Beetroot Juice!
It was soon time to go pick up the girls who had had lots of fun…..
and then it was time to head for home having had a lovely foodie day out!

Lovely post, Margaret. Disappointed we couldn’t make it. Looked like great fun, with great food.
Colette, we had a great day on Saturday! Have so much to report on Friday it is going to take me longer to pull that one together! You should definitely put Kilkenny on list for next year!

Sorry we didn’t meet up on Saturday. I was at Rothe House until 2 pm and then had to go on to another event. Thanks for the mention though. Hope the girls enjoyed themselves. Would it be all right to use the photograph of the girl in the mask for future publicity – it’s ideal because she’s not recognisable, yet it gives a great idea of the activities on the day.
I believe we missed you by minutes! Had long chat with Patricia and Alan tho! I’m sure there should be no problem with regard to the photo (but I’d better check with her Mum and Dad first!)…. the only reason I used it was because she wasn’t recognisable! The girls thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon… plans afoot to make more dough this week during mid-term!
