I know the song is ‘sowing the seeds of love’…. but I was sowing other kinds of seeds!
Once the seed order arrives I am constantly watching the weather to see when can I get out there and start planting. I tend to order my seeds from two sources – the Organic Centre in Rossinver for their variety of organic seeds and Heritage Bulbs – Wild about Veg as they have a great range of old varieties of fruit and veg.

And finally, growing and planting season is here… yippee! I know gardening does take up a lot of time, but it is a wonderful pastime. I am at my happiest just out there pottering about. There is always something to be done!
In the past couple of weeks I’ve started off my onion seeds – two types – red and white. I’ve also got Brussels Sprouts and two variety of tomatoes germinating. All of these sitting on racks in the kitchen! Eventually I will have a greenhouse for these things!!!!!!
Getting onions started
Just the other day Farmer Alfie and I spent a couple of hours clearing out the Strawberry bed which had become very overgrown with quite a variety of weeds. I won’t bore you with the detail! Ooh, the aching muscles the following day from all that bending and stretching over the beds, but it will all be worth it in June when we (hopefully) have our usual bumper crop of delicious strawberries.
Our strawberries have become the talk of the parish hereabouts – children and adults drop in regularly during strawberry season on the off-chance that there might be a punnet or two going a-begging!
It is so nice at this time of year to take a walk around the place and see the growth appearing on the fruit bushes, and the garlic planted earlier in the year is already sprouting.
Six years on and just this week, I finally started a flower bed! All our efforts to date in the garden have been on growing vegetables, but last year our neighbour, Mrs. Dyer, very nicely gave me some cuttings and surplus from her garden. I had over-wintered these in pots, but it was high time to get plants into the garden. That was my activity in between times on St. Patrick’s Day!

Of course, now I cannot remember what plants she gave me… but… won’t that be all the nicer when they bloom and surprise me!
How is your garden growing?
A Year In Redwood 
This year I’m determined to make better use of my garden!! I always have tomatoes and last year managed to produce my own salad but everything else works on ‘ the survival of the fittest’ school of gardening! What would you recommend as easy for the ‘non greenfingered’ to grow?
@ Hey Pesto Definitely would recommend peas and beans… both are veg I love. The taste of freshly picked peas from the garden is wonderful and there is the added bonus that the flowers on the plants are beautiful so they look really pretty! I will post later some really good and easy varieties.
